A Moment of Lucidity

I was visiting a patient with severe Dementia. Her husband had cared for her for a total of 10 years. She was now emaciated, a tiny fraction of herself who sat curled up on the couch chatting in a nonsensical stream of consciousness. Non-Stop, that is, until I prayed for her.

I put a hand on her shoulder and said, "You are special, you know. God loves you and He made you that way." She suddenly sat still and quiet. I said, "It's true, God loves you so much than you know.""Yeah," she said, "Yeah."

I choked-up and started to cry. I cried because of the power of God's love to pierce even the most devastating disease. Still, maybe I cried because I also felt a bit sad about the number of people who have YET to achieve that moment of lucidity with regard to God's call, God's truth, God's voice and yes--above all--His love for them.

What prevents most people from having that moment isn't a disease, it's often simply pride. Pride blocks the truth in many forms. It feels good, but in essence, like Dementia, it leads to death (Romans 3:23, 6:23, Prov 11:2, Prov 16:18, etc.)

My appeal in this brief blog is for one thing--humility. It's a choice we make to admit that we don't have it all together. It's a decision to be open to change...it leads to the lucidity to hear from God and then to change...And that change leads to conversion--a saving faith that then ultimately leads to live, for now...and for eternity.

To that End,

Pastor Joel
